Finding love in later life

Online Dating in later life

Online dating can seem like a chore at the best of times, nevermind in the middle of a global pandemic - this is heightened even further the older you get. There's a notion that all of the good guys have already been taken but that definitely isn't the case.

I understand the trepidation of treading into online dating in later life and the concerns but whether you're looking yourself for dating sites for over 50* year olds or whether you're helping a parent/friend return to the dating scene it really couldn't be easier

The Positives to Online Dating

A huge benefit to online dating later in life is that you have the freedom and fun of your teenage years but this time you've got the wisdom and money to back it up. You can afford to enjoy life a little more and find the right person to enjoy it with.

You can also go at your own pace with online dating. Other in real-life alternatives can sometimes move along too quickly, especially when you've got a whole lifetime to talk to your prospective partners about. Dating online means you can control who you contact, how often you contact them and take it at your own pace.

One of the rare benefits of the pandemic is that it's caused the dating scene to slow down considerably. The goal is no longer to get on a face to face date as soon as possible, more emphasis is now placed on building a connection and creating a strong bond that will increase when you do get a chance to meet. This has significantly improved the process for older people because there's no rush and you can actually take your time finding the right person and building a connection

If you're still hesitant about beginning your online dating journey why not try and take up a new hobby or find an online community focused around your hobby? An example could be a gardening community, meeting and speaking to likeminded individuals online about a topic you love will help you gain confidence in your conversations with strangers. You will develop friendships with people with similar interests and could even meet a romantic interest this way too

The Negatives to Online Dating

While I've highlighted the positives of online dating for the over 50s it's important you understand the negatives and stay safe online too which would apply no matter what your age. The internet is awash with unscrupulous individuals looking to scam people and they make a habit of targeting the lonely. Make sure you remain safe on your dating journey, never give out any personal information such as passwords or bank details and always consider who you're talking to.

Unfortunately there are many people who pretend to be someone they're not and who might not have the best of intentions. Developing a thick skin to deal with these people is a necessity, see dating as a fun experience and understand to take everything with a pinch of salt until you know exactly who someone is
